The OE spec Oil Pump Gear is fine for standard Zetec engines, but this component can become a weak point when used in modified and high-performance engines. The original OE spec Oil Pump Gear is manufactured from Cast Sintered Steel and as such can fail at high RPM and due to rapid changes in engine speed.
Retroford offer an upgraded EN24 Billet Steel Oil Pump Gear / Rotor that has been specifically designed to withstand the additional stresses and forces exerted on the oil pump in modified Zetec engines.
The Oil Pump Gear also features a micromachined surface finish which helps to increase component life, reduce wear and provide closer operating tolerances.
This billet rotor can be fitted to both used and brand new genuine Ford oil pumps, subject to the crankshaft modification detailed in the fitting note below.
For use with genuine Ford oil pumps ONLY.
Suitable for Normally Aspirated, Turbocharged and Supercharged engines.
Suitable for 1.8L and 2.0L Zetec Black Top engines and ST170 engines.
Not suitable for Zetec Silver Top engines.
IMPORTANT FITTING NOTE:
This billet oil pump rotor uses an upgraded internal drive profile and will not slide directly over an unmodified crankshaft.
When manufacturing a steel oil pump rotor to fit directly over the standard crankshaft, it is normally necessary to machine a radius/relief into the internal corners of the rotor drive profile. However, these relieved corners can create potential stress concentration points from which cracks may initiate and propagate, particularly when the rotor is subjected to the high cyclic loads associated with high-RPM and high-performance engines.
For this reason, Retroford deliberately machines the internal drive profile without these corner reliefs, maintaining more material in these critical areas of the rotor.
As a result of this stronger profile, the four sharp edges of the crankshaft drive flats where the oil pump rotor locates must be lightly dressed with a metal file. This provides the necessary clearance for the billet rotor to slide freely on and off the crankshaft.
Only a very small amount of material needs to be removed from the edges of the crankshaft flats. Carefully trial-fit the rotor during this process and continue dressing the edges until the rotor slides freely into position without being forced.
Take care to remove all filings and debris before assembling the oil pump and engine.
This fitting requirement is intentional and is a direct result of the upgraded rotor design. It is not a manufacturing fault with the component.
